Vibecoding vs traditional coding: what actually changes
Traditional coding means you write the code, line by line. Vibecoding means you describe what you want and an AI writes it. The software still has to run, be secure and do what users need. What changes is where your effort goes.
What gets easier
- Getting a first version running.
- Writing boilerplate and repetitive code.
- Trying an unfamiliar language or framework.
- Turning an idea into something you can click.
What stays hard
- Deciding what to build and for whom.
- Understanding why something fails.
- Keeping a growing project coherent.
- Security, performance and data safety.
Where your time goes
Less typing, more directing and reviewing. You spend time describing, testing and judging. The skill is knowing what good looks like and noticing when the output is not it.
Reading code still matters
You do not have to write every line, but you should be able to read the important ones. When something breaks in a way the model cannot fix, understanding the code is what gets you out.
They work well together
Many builders vibecode the first version, then switch to careful, hands-on work for the parts that need precision, such as payments, permissions and data.
Record your decisions either way
Whichever way you build, a log of what you decided and why makes the project easier to continue and easier to explain.
Keep your own build log
Write numbered entries, follow other builders, and let people watch your idea become real.
