How to build a portfolio when you build with AI
When AI helps write the code, a gallery of screenshots stops proving much. What shows your ability is judgment: what you chose to build, how you steered, and how you fixed what went wrong.
Show the process
For each project include the idea, the stages it went through and the key decisions. A timeline from first entry to launch shows more than a final screenshot.
Be clear about what you did
Say what you directed and what the AI produced. Honesty here builds trust, and clients and employers usually care about outcomes and judgment, not typing.
Include what did not work
A shelved project with a clear explanation shows maturity. Not everything you ship is a hit, and readers know it.
Make it easy to see the result
- A live link, or a short video if it is not public.
- A one-sentence tagline for each project.
- The tools you used.
- The date it launched.
Keep it current
A portfolio that updates as you build never goes stale. A build log does this automatically, and you can embed your latest entries on your own site or add a badge to your README.
Keep your own build log
Write numbered entries, follow other builders, and let people watch your idea become real.
