What is MCP? A beginner’s guide to the Model Context Protocol
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is a shared way for an AI assistant to connect to other software, so the assistant can read from it or act in it with your permission.
The problem it solves
An assistant on its own can only work with what you paste into the conversation. To look up a record, check a design or deploy a site, it needs a connection. Without a standard, every connection is custom work.
How it works
- An MCP server wraps a service and describes what it can do.
- The assistant connects to the server and can call those actions.
- You decide which servers to connect and what each is allowed to do.
Examples
- A server that lets an assistant read and update a database.
- A server that reads designs from a design tool.
- A server that posts a build log entry for you after you approve it.
Staying safe
- Connect only servers you trust.
- Give each the least access it needs.
- Review what an assistant is about to do before you allow anything that cannot be undone.
Finding good ones
Look at what other builders actually use. On vibFolio, MCP servers are one of the kinds of tool builders write about, so you can read the entries of people who used one on a real project.
Keep your own build log
Write numbered entries, follow other builders, and let people watch your idea become real.
