How to name your project (and not regret it)
You can rename a project later, but links and habits stick. A little thought up front saves trouble.
What a good name does
- Is short enough to remember after hearing it once.
- Is easy to spell after hearing it.
- Hints at what the project is, or at least does not mislead.
- Is not confusable with a well-known product.
A process
- Write twenty names without judging them.
- Cross out anything hard to say or spell.
- Say the remaining ones aloud, in a sentence.
- Check that the name is free where you need it: the web address, the handle, the app stores.
- Pick one and sleep on it.
Ask an AI for options, not a decision
Assistants are good at generating lists. Use them to widen the field and then choose yourself, because you know the project.
Do not wait for perfect
Names matter less than shipping. Choose a good-enough name and start your log. You can always write an entry announcing a rename.
Keep your own build log
Write numbered entries, follow other builders, and let people watch your idea become real.
