Anthropic document skills (docx, pdf, pptx, xlsx) Skill
The four skills behind Claude's file creation, for Word, PDF, PowerPoint and Excel files: create, read and edit them, with scripts for tracked changes, PDF forms and formula recalculation.
These are four skills in Anthropic's anthropics/skills repository, and the README says they power Claude's document capabilities. docx creates Word files with the docx library, edits existing ones by working on the XML inside, and handles tracked changes and comments. pdf covers merging, splitting, extracting text and tables with pdfplumber, filling forms and OCR on scanned pages. pptx builds decks with pptxgenjs and reads or edits existing ones. xlsx works through openpyxl and recalculates formulas with LibreOffice, reporting any formula errors it finds. In Claude Code, register the repository with /plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills, then run /plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills. The README's example is asking Claude to "use the PDF skill to extract the form fields" from a file. On Claude.ai the README says these skills are already available to paid plans. We would use them whenever a builder's work has to leave as a file someone else opens: a pitch deck, a spreadsheet of launch numbers, a signed-off PDF. Two cautions. Unlike most of the repository, these four are source-available rather than open source, under a proprietary license. They also lean on outside programs, including LibreOffice, pandoc and Poppler, and the xlsx skill warns that its LibreOffice recalculation cannot evaluate XLOOKUP, FILTER, UNIQUE and a few other newer Excel functions.
