Aider Agent

An open-source AI pair programmer for the terminal that edits code in your git repository with the language model of your choice and commits each change.

Write-up

Aider is an open-source AI pair programmer that runs in your terminal and edits the code in your local git repository. It builds a map of the whole codebase to work in larger projects, supports over a hundred languages, and commits each change with a descriptive message so it can be diffed and undone with ordinary git tools. It can lint and test after every change and try to fix what fails, and it works with most language models, cloud or local, using your own API keys. The docs' quickest install, for Python 3.8 to 3.13, is: python -m pip install aider-install, then aider-install. Change into your project and start it with a model and key, for example: aider --model sonnet --api-key anthropic=<key>. There are also uv, pipx and one-line installers for Mac, Linux and Windows. We think it fits builders who want to choose their own model, including a local one, or who want every AI edit to land as its own commit they can review and revert. Adding a screenshot or a web page to the chat for visual context also works. The docs name its main limitation directly: aider may not work well with less capable models. If a model returns code but aider cannot apply the edits and commit them, it is usually because the model is not capable of returning proper code edits, and the docs point to the aider leaderboards to choose one. They also warn that installing aider through an operating system's own software repositories often brings in incorrect dependencies.
